Dont Do It Yourself

It can be very satisfying to dig into a project yourself and enjoy savings and satisfaction that are not available when you hire a professional. However, not every job is suitable for the DIY treatment. How can you make wise decisions about which jobs to tackle on your own? Several factors should be considered.

First, is there a serious risk of damage or injury? If the professionals who do this work have to carry liability insurance because of the potential for harm to others, it’s probably not wise for amateurs to take a shot at it. Projects in this category would include electrical work, installing gas lines and surgery.

Second, how steep is the learning curve? Handy men and women with nice collections of tools are equipped to tackle a wide variety of projects, but is it really cost effective to take the time to learn a new skill if it is not the kind of thing that is likely to come up again?

Third, is it a fun job? This is a matter of individual preference, but some jobs are tedious, cramped and frustrating. Don’t let stubborn refusal to ask for help box you into doing projects that you won’t enjoy. The answer to this question will vary based on the individual’s experience and temperament.

Fourth, is the DIY version of this job likely to be noticeable in a way that will affect your future enjoyment? Sometimes years later a do-it-yourselfer will point out a flaw in his own work that he likely would not have noticed if the job had been hired out.

Finally, how much are you really saving? Some jobs can be done so quickly and inexpensively by professionals that it just doesn’t make sense to do it yourself unless the project is a source of entertainment for you or an opportunity to instruct your kids.

By four of these five criteria, automobile window tinting is not a good choice for a do it yourself project. No one will be seriously injured if you do a crummy job on your tinting, but it can be a difficult job for the amateur, and your mistakes can be difficult to correct. More importantly, it is not that expensive to hire a professional.
