Lowering your Utility Bills With Window Tinting

When it is time to calculate your household expenses, why does it always seem like the actual totals do not match your estimates? Sometimes it is because of unrealistic predictions, but other times there are expenses that steadily increase without much fanfare. Utilities are not an optional expense, but they are not a fixed budget item either. Though heavily regulated, power companies routinely have their rate increases approved, and customers end up paying the higher prices.

What are some simple things you can do to lower your utility bills? Some changes seem intuitive, but they are under-utilized. For example, when you are brushing your teeth, do you let the water flow the entire time, or do you turn it off while you brush then back on when you rinse? It seems like a small savings of water, but brushing your teeth is such a common repeated activity that the savings add up over time.

Multiply the water savings by the number of residents in your home, and you can see the savings add up. No one has to teach this to their children in countries that have routine water shortages. The family learns to conserve water because they routinely run out. In Central Florida, we do not have to deal with shortages, so it is easy to forget the benefit of savings pennies per day.

What about turning off the lights when you leave a room? This one is not as easy as it used to be. It depends on the kind of bulbs you are using. Some types of light bulbs require more energy to power up, but very little energy to keep going, so it makes more sense to turn those on and off only once per day.

Everyone knows that you can lower energy costs by adjusting the thermostat on your air conditioner, but that change often comes at the expense of your comfort. Window tinting is a one-time home improvement expense that will increase your comfort without increasing your energy expense.
