Is It Legal To Tint Car Windows In Florida?

Yes, it is, within certain guidelines. In 1991, the Florida State Legislature enacted regulations concerning darkening your vehicle’s windows or applying reflective tint. VLT stands for “Visible Light Transmission,” and it is measured as a percentage of visible light allowed through your car windows. The regulations are quite specific and vary slightly for vans and SUVs as compared to cars. The rules are also different depending upon where in your vehicle the glass is found, generally much stricter at the front of the car and less so at the rear.

For automobile windshields, non-reflective tint is allowed above the manufacturer’s AS-1 line. That line varies by vehicle, but it is usually found about five inches down from the top of the windshield. Front side automobile windows must allow more than 28% VLT, and back side windows must allow more than 15% VLT. Rear automobile windows must allow more than 15% VLT.

For vans and SUVs, the rules are the same for the windshield and front side windows, but different toward the rear. For the back side windows and rear windows, the level of tinting must allow more than 6% VLT.

Vehicle window tinting is used to reduce heat and glare by reflecting incoming light. The Florida statute also addresses the level of reflection that is allowed, and the rules are the same for all types of vehicles. Front side window must be no more than 25% reflective, and back side windows must be no more than 35% reflective.

Any color is allowed, and film manufacturers are not required to issue certificates for their tinting film. The Florida law requires that all tinted vehicles have dual side mirrors in case the view through the rear is obscured. Installers place a sticker to identify legal tinting on the inside of the driver’s doorjamb.
